From Nandi Hills to Kashmir: A Journey That Redefined Wanderlust

It all began with a view—an incredible, soul-stirring view from Nandi Hills in Bangalore. As the sun rose over the misty hills, it felt like a sign. I needed to explore more, to chase horizons, and soak in experiences. By the time I descended from Nandi Hills, I had made up my mind: Kashmir was calling, and I had to go.

That evening, I booked a flight to Delhi on a whim. No grand plans, just an open heart and a desire to explore. Little did I know, this would turn into one of the most memorable journeys of my life.

Delhi: A City of Surprises

The drive to the airport was a rollercoaster of emotions—excitement tinged with the fear of missing my flight. But life had a twist for me. The flight, thankfully, got rescheduled, giving me breathing space.

I spent two vibrant days in Delhi. Reuniting with friends, we dined at quirky cafes, laughed like kids at a trampoline park, and capped off the evenings at a cozy bar. Over a dinner of flavorsome delights, we cheered for our favorite team in a gripping T20 match. Delhi, with its energy and warmth, was the perfect prelude to my Kashmir adventure.

Sleeper Bus: A Rough Patch on the Road

On my third evening, I boarded a sleeper bus from Majnu ka Tilla to Jammu. What I had hoped would be a smooth ride turned into a rough patch—courtesy of a not-so-great experience with Redbus services. Sleeper buses, as I learned the hard way, are unpredictable. But the discomfort couldn’t overshadow my growing anticipation.

Jammu to Kashmir: The Moment of Awe

The next morning, I shared a private taxi from Jammu to Srinagar. And this, my friends, is where my heart skipped a beat. As we drove through winding roads flanked by majestic snow-capped mountains, lush green meadows, and sparkling rivers, I found myself staring out the window, unable to blink.

I was in awe. Kashmir wasn’t just a place—it was a feeling, a dreamscape brought to life.

Srinagar: A Community of Wanderers

Arriving in Srinagar, I checked into a community house, a haven for solo travelers. Sharing stories with strangers who felt like old friends added an unexpected joy to the journey. After a day of rest, I teamed up with a couple of fellow explorers to hire a car and venture deeper into Kashmir’s heart.

Three Days, Three Destinations

Gulmarg:

Our first stop was Gulmarg, where an ice trek awaited. Climbing through snow-laden paths to Phase 1 was exhilarating. Although my guide denied me the adventure of Phase 2 due to safety concerns, the sheer beauty of the place more than compensated.

Pahalgam:

Nestled in pristine valleys, Pahalgam was a world apart. The tranquility here felt like a soothing balm for the soul.

Sinthan Top:

The trek to Sinthan Top was pure magic. Reaching the icy peak, surrounded by untouched snow, I felt a connection with nature that words fail to describe.

Each moment was a celebration of Kashmir’s grandeur, and each destination deepened my love for this paradise.

Exploring Srinagar: History, Culture, and Serenity

Back in Srinagar, I decided to go all in. I rented a bike to explore the city, diving into its rich heritage and breathtaking locales.

Rani Mahal: A palace that speaks of elegance and history.

Shankaracharya Shiv Temple: Perched atop a hill, this temple offers panoramic views of the city and a sense of peace.

Kheer Bhawani Temple: A spiritual haven nestled in a serene setting.

From express boating adventures to the gentle allure of a Shikara ride on Dal Lake, every experience was a new story. And the food? Oh, the food! From fragrant Wazwan dishes to the freshest spring water, every meal was a reminder of Kashmir’s rich culinary heritage.

The People of Kashmir: Warmth Beyond Words

Kashmir isn’t just about its stunning landscapes; it’s the people who make it extraordinary. Everyone I met welcomed me like family, their warmth cutting through the cold air. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Why can’t we, as Indians, let go of the tensions surrounding this paradise? Kashmir deserves to thrive, unburdened by conflict.

Houseboat Stay: A Dream Come True

On my last day in Srinagar, I ticked off a long-standing dream—staying on a houseboat in Dal Lake. The lake’s vastness was mesmerizing, its calm waters mirroring the serenity I felt within. Watching the sunset from the deck, I realized how this journey had changed me.

But the Journey Continues...

As the trip wound down, I was supposed to head back. But Kashmir had one more surprise in store. On a whim, I joined a shared cab heading to Leh. Adventure was calling again, and I wasn’t about to say no.

To be continued...;)
